2.5pts on West Brom to beat Arsenal at 13/5 (Paddy Power). |
Baggies have already beaten Newcastle and Man United and can now see off Arsenal second XI. |
We tipped West Brom at 3/1 to beat Manchester United in the last round and see no reason to desert the Baggies when they host Premiership leaders Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup on Tuesday.
The odds aren't quite as generous - with 13/5 the best on offer - but West Brom have already knocked the Red Devils and Newcastle out of the competition and can complete a notable hat-trick.
They fully deserved their 2-0 success against an Old Trafford second string and Arsene Wenger is unlikely to send out too many of his star names after a week which has seen them qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League and reclaim top spot in the Premiership.
The team he sent out in the last round against Wolves was:
Stack, Tavlaridis, Clichy, Hoyte (Skulason 55), Wiltord, Vieira, Simek, Fabregas Soler, Bentley (Smith 78), Kanu, Aliadiere (Papadopulos 83).
Admittedly there looked to be a number of stars of the future on show as they blitzed Dave Jones' men 5-1 but that had just as much to do with Wolves' failings.
Indeed even Spurs (beaten 4-0 at Newcastle on Saturday) managed to put five past Wolves the following weekend.
This is Arsenal's sixth game in the space of 17 days and while everything seems rosy, they haven't actually been in prime form domestically.
Blackburn were unlucky not to get something out of Sunday's visit to Highbury while the Gunners were held by Leicester and Fulham in their previous two games.
And Wenger has said he is sticking to his policy of not using players who began Sunday's match with Blackburn which rules out the likes of Thierry Henry, Robert Pires, Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Vieira, Freddie Ljungberg, Sol Campbell and Jens Lehmann to name just seven!
Just as they were when they played Manchester United, West Brom top Nationwide One. And they are unbeaten since then, showing bundles of character to come from behind to draw with West Ham and Crewe and finding a late winner to see off Bradford.
Indeed you have to go back to October 21 to find their last defeat so they'll surely give Arsenal's reserves plenty more to think about than Wolves did.
We highlighted the chances of Jason Koumas finding the net against United and though that bet didn't come off, the argument for backing him remains a valid one.
He's scored seven goals in 21 starts this season but the problem now is that the 9/2 which was freely available has shrunk to no better than 3/1 so we'll resist the temptation to get involved this time, especially as he's been suffering with a slight hamstring injury recently and may not play a full part in the game.
The other quarter-final sees Bolton host Southampton and this is a game that has 'No Bet' written all over it.
The sides played out a goalless draw in the Premiership at the start of last month but both have been flying recently.
Wanderers have won four out of five - including away successes at Liverpool and Chelsea - while Saints have suddenly found their scoring boots too and come into the game seeking a fourth successive victory.
Consistency hasn't been either side's strength this season though and with both clubs taking the competition seriously it's impossible to argue with the odds on offer which see Bolton at 13/10 and Southampton on 2/1 with the draw a best-priced 23/10.
If pushed we'd veer towards Bolton, especially if Southampton striker James Beattie is forced to miss the game on account of an ankle injury.
