300/1 MICHEEL IS MAJOR MAN
By Dave Tindall
USPGA winner Shaun Micheel was a best-priced 300/1 going into the final major of the year at Oak Hill.
Blue Square were biggest on the little known American, while the Tote were shortest at 150/1.
Micheel had decent form ahead of the event after finishing 10th and 24th in his previous two strokeplay events.
And seasoned US golf punters would have been aware of his impressive greens in regulation stats - although no-one could have predicted his sensational shot to three inches at the final hole!
Micheel is ninth for greens hit in 2003 which clearly aided him at Oak Hill although his putting (188th in putts per round) would have put potential backers off.
The result at Oak Hill would have been cheered loudly by the bookies with the first four home almost impossible to predict.
Runner-up Chad Campbell was freely available at 100/1 while Tim Clark and Alex Cejka were both on offer at 200/1 and above.
Again, stats students may have had that trio in the back of their minds with the course resembling a US Open layout.
Campbell is tied second for greens in regulation while Clark is 10th in driving accuracy. Cejka also has solid stats from tee to green.
Clark's third place finish will have been a blow to backers of Ernie Els in the top Rest of the World market.
Els was as short as 5/2 to prevail but despite beating off his main competition, his compatriot Clark pipped him by two shots. Clark was an 80/1 shot for top R.O.W. honours.
Cejka was 40/1 to be top European.
