ENGLAND EXPECTS FROM BECKS
AND CO
By Frank Malley of SportingLife
When Sven-Goran Eriksson decided against taking
the Chelsea route to riches beyond the ken of
the average football fan, he did so for two main
reasons. First, he understood that if he abandoned the
England ship mid-voyage, he would forever be
treated as a traitor in the land where the
national game is the national obsession. Second, he believed England had a fighting
chance of winning a major trophy for the first
time in 38 years. Already Eriksson has admitted anything less than
reaching the semi-finals of the European
Championships in Portugal, as they did at Euro
96 before losing to Germany, would be a
"failure".
