Cheltenham 12:50 - Prestbury Juvenile Novices' Hurdle (grade 2)
Michael Chapman's Royal Max has shown improved form for going hurdling and has to be respected but he is held by BARIZAN on running here last month and at Market Rasen in November and the Evan Williams-trained gelding can have his measure again, getting the vote with Trumpstoo rated the best of the rest.
The selection was capable on the flat in Ireland but looks even better over timber having won each of his last four starts and he can win again. Kevin O'Donnell's Roseska has won her last two outings in races at Clonmel and Gowran Park and has to be considered. Sheena West's Screaming Brave made a pleasing debut over hurdles when finding Causeway King just a length too good in a novices' hurdle at Warwick, while Trumpstoo is closely matched with Nicky Nutjob on running at Wetherby last month and there should not be much between the pair today. Barizan has an obvious chance though and is hard to oppose.
Cheltenham 13:20 - Ultima Frontrunner In It Solutions Novices' Chase
Disappointingly just the three runners line up for this novices' chase and all three have claims but Nigel Twiston-Davies has his team in good form right now and, having given the impression that he would come on for the run behind Fair Along at Wetherby last month, PETTIFOUR looks the pick of the trio ahead of Toby Jug and Kanpai.
John O'Shea's gelding showed a decent level of form over hurdles three years ago and has had his problems since then but he resumed winning ways when landing a novices' chase in good fashion at Stratford last month and he has to be respected. Sarah Humphrey's Toby Jug has won each of his last three starts and is going the right way but if Pettifour's jumping holds up then he will be tough to beat.
Cheltenham 13:55 - Servo Trophy Handicap Chase (grade 3)
Zacharova looks the pick of the two runners in the race trained by Venetia Williams ahead of Miko de Beauchene but both may struggle off their current marks and preference in a competitive contest is for DON'T PUSH IT.
Jonjo O'Neill's gelding ran some good races in defeat over hurdles last term but did not win until returned to fences when successful at the Grand National meeting. The son of Old Vic ran well on his reappearance at the same venue last month and that run should have put him spot on for this race which is over a more suitable trip. Maljimar ran well here for Nick Williams last time and is bound to have his backers, while Lacdoudal may need another run before showing his best. Nigel Twiston-Davies has two runners in the race with Hello Bud looking the pick of the two ahead of Baron Windrush and they have to be considered with the stable's runners in good form but a bigger threat is likely to come from Russian Trigger. Vic Dartnall's gelding lacks a recent run but ended last season in good form and, with the yard's runners in good form, he has to be respected. The Thomas Mullins-trained Chelsea Harbour will appreciate any further softening of the ground but as conditions are at present Don't Push It looks the one to beat.
Cheltenham 14:35 - Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase (grade 3 Handicap)
Ferdy Murphy and Nigel Twiston-Davies have both won this race in recent years and each has two strong representatives today, however ACCORDING TO PETE has been overlooked in the run-up to the race and Malcolm Jefferson's gelding is given the vote.
The rain that is forecast will be in the gelding's favour and he also has fitness on his side after a spin around York last month. His form in the north a year ago reads well and he lost very little in defeat behind Big Fella Thanks at Doncaster in January. That horse franked the form when sixth in the Grand National and it is a bonus that he is able to race off a 3lb lower mark this afternoon. Second-season chasers traditionally have a good record in the race, and one of those is Jewson Novices' Handicap winner Chapoturgeon. With doubts about the ground for Poquelin, and doubts about the trip and progression of Tatenen, he looks the pick of the Paul Nicholls runners. In general his jumping last season was exceptional and although he is 18lb higher than his win in March, with another year on his back there is no telling how high he might go. A slog in the mud will suit Ballyfitz who has gone well fresh in the past, Tartak flopped on his reappearance at Aintree where he didn't jump well but a long season lies ahead, whilst top-weight Our Vic won this race in 2004 but he had an 'Annus Horribilis' last season. Tranquil Sea has been the subject of strong support all week; Ed O' Grady's gelding is proven in the mud and he looks a huge player given that he is now 10lb better off with the selection than when sixth here in March. Kerry National hero Northern Alliance is not unduly punished with a 7lb higher mark here, and he is another who doesn't have too much to find with Chapoturgeon. A win for him would be a timely fillip for under-fire jockey Paul Carberry. Tarotino's jumping has been a feature of his wins and Alan King's gelding is not to be underestimated as he deserves this step up in class. A 15lb higher mark will make life tough but he looks a player despite rain unlikely to be in his favour. Il Duce may be enlivened by a switch of yards, whilst My Petra took the wrong route at Wetherby last time. That was a race that she had won the year before and she was travelling well at the time of the jockey error, so it would appear that she is in very good form at present. Bible Lord seemed to revel under the guidance of Nick Scholfield last time out, whilst I'm So Lucky and Leslingtaylor both have stamina for this trip to prove. From Dawn To Dusk is tempting given his course record but he would prefer a quicker surface, so of more interest are Watch My Back (ran well here behind Poquelin recently) and Three Mirrors (fifth in this race last year) who represent Ferdy Murphy. As competitive a renewal as ever, but the hope is that According To Pete can prosper.
Cheltenham 15:10 - Jardine Lloyd Thompson Handicap Hurdle (listed)
Eamon O'Connell's Powerstation has failed to take to fences in his last two starts and may do better back over hurdles but he has plenty of weight to carry and a better bet looks to be the reappearing ANDYTOWN, who gets the vote ahead of Time Electric.
The Thomas Mullins-trained gelding has run better in his last two starts with a win at Listowel followed by a decent effort when chasing home Noble Prince at Naas. He has solid claims off what seems a fair mark on his British debut and makes more appeal than Made In Japan, who has to race from 5lbs out of the handicap. Earth Planet made a pleasing return here last month when a close third behind Dragon Eye in a novices' hurdle and has every chance off a mark of 136. David Pipe's pair Great Endeavour and Comply Or Die are probably best watched at present with future races on the agenda the target and of more interest may be Green Mile. Tony Martin's gelding was pulled up over fences at Limerick last month but earlier form over hurdles is solid and he has to be considered. Lie Forrit is less exposed than most of these and is another with claims but preference is for Andytown. Nicky Henderson's gelding was good value for his win in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle at the festival this year and looks worth backing to make a winning return on a similar surface having probably found the going too quick at Aintree following that course win.
Cheltenham 15:45 - Ultima Business Solutions Novices' Handicap Hurdle
Dinarius was good value for his win at Carlisle at the beginning of the month but an 11lb rise for that success leaves the Alex Hales-trained gelding facing a stiff task to follow up and a better bet looks to be PSI, who gets the vote ahead of Alazan.
The three-year-old has only had three runs over hurdles for Philip Hobbs and he looks reasonably well treated on his handicap debut off a mark of 113. High Bird Humphrey has run two decent races this season, over fences on his reappearance and back over hurdles when beaten a nose by Whisky Magic at Carlisle last month and he has every chance but a 6lb rise since that run makes this tougher. Vinnes Friend put previous disappointments behind him when winning at Wexford last month and has to be considered along with Bernard Llewellyn's Sweet World, who has run to a consistent level of form of late and should be thereabouts again. Preference though is for Gary Moore's Psi, who stepped up from the form of his reappearance run when narrowly beaten by Scots Dragoon at Sandown recently and a reproduction of that effort may well suffice for the four-year-old.
