6pts win Robert Allenby at 13/2 with Coral(Top Aus/NZ market). |
The classy Aussie looks value to fare best of the men from Down Under. |
 |
2pts win Luke Donald at 11/2 with Heathorns ('Young Guns' market). |
Donald's efforts on the US Tour have been undervalued here and has the quality to come out on top. |
The odds compilers across the land have been up burning the midnight oil devising a whole host of markets for the avid golf fan to bet on over the four days of the Open Championship.
After spending considerable time ploughing through them in a bid to discover some value, Robert Allenby at 13/2 to fare best from Coral's Top Australian/New Zealander category looks a cracking wager.
The mercurial world number 33 is tough to predict but has bags of talent and could be in with a chance of walking away with the top prize if on a going weekend.
A superb ball striker and fine competitor, he looks up against a modest challenge from Down Under.
Hills make Michael Campbell their 9/2 favourite but the Kiwi was far from convincing when almost throwing away the European Open at the K Club and I rate Allenby pound for pound a far better player anyway.
Of the remainder, Stuart Appleby and Stephen Leaney have been inconsistent this term, Steve Elkington is generally light years off his best form while Peter Lonard missed the cut by a country mile at Loch Lomond last week having not done so all season when playing in America.
Whichever way you slice it, Allenby looks something decent to bet on.
Another interesting market to be priced up is the 'Young Guns' with Heathorns and Luke Donald is given the nod.
Donald is mixing it with the big boys on the PGA Tour and is enjoying a very successful first full year following a sparkling collegiate and amateur career.
The 24-year-old has posted five top-25 finishes already but his exploits seemed to have gone relatively unnoticed on this side of the Pond and that is possibly why he has been priced up as the 11/2 outsider of five in a win-only list.Current golden boy Justin Rose has been installed as the 5/2 favourite and that reflects his chance on what is a breakthrough year for him. He is swinging magnificently at the moment and is the one to beat.
Paul Casey, Charles Howell III and Adam Scott complete the line-up.
The balance of Casey's form is no better than Donald's, yet he is a 7/2 chance, while the latter pair have lost their way somewhat in recent weeks.
Donald's experience of the Open Championship has not been pretty to date with two missed cuts but he is a more mature performer these days and looks capable of giving us a good run for our money this week.
