POLITICS:
David Miliband is the big odds-on favourite at 2-5 on Betfair to be elected the next permanent leader of the Labour Party. Voting in the leadership contest gets under way on Wednesday.
The former Foreign Secretary is favoured to become the Leader of the Opposition ahead of younger brother Ed, the Shadow Energy Secretary currently 3-1 to win the backing of his party peers.
Of the three other candidates challenging for the Labour top job, Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham is a 45-1 chance, while Ed Balls is a 109-1 long shot.
Diane Abbott, the backbench MP, is the least fancied to gain the number votes needed to be installed as party leader. At 249-1 the 57-year-old is the rank outsider.
Betfair’s Alex Bake said: “This leadership contest has been billed in the headlines as a ‘Battle of the Brothers’, with the Milibands firmly established as the two to beat. With three weeks to go until the voting closes the punters are backing David to win.”
