Ian Millward previews this weekend's Carnegie Challenge Cup final and action in the NRL.
Leeds (scr) v Warrington (scr)
This promises to be a fantastic Carnegie Challenge Cup final and there's nothing between the two teams as the betting would indicate. I'm torn.
Before a ball was kicked in anger this season I said Leeds would win the Challenge Cup and I became more and more convinced as they saw off Wigan and St Helens en-route to Wembley. My heart still goes with the Rhinos but the head keeps returning to the fact they're without Jamie Peacock and Warrington are in terrific form, playing very well.
The lack of Peacock and Luke Burgess weakens Leeds up front but I take them to win. Kevin Sinfield's kicking game will be a huge factor and Danny Maguire and Danny Buderus are in top form right now. The game will be won by Michael Monaghan or Buderus controlling the ruck area for Warrington and Leeds respectively. Whoever emerges from that battle the winner will have a huge say on where the Challenge Cup goes on Saturday night.
I'm taking Leeds to win. Warrington are defending the crown but unlike last year they face a team who have won trophies recently. It should be a thriller.
For those looking for a bet in terms of the Lance Todd Trophy winner I like Sinfield. He will be at the heart of everything Leeds do. Buderus would have a chance too but he interchanges with Matt Diskin and may not get enough game time to seal the vote.
As for the first try-scorer I'm with Ryan Hall. He's a big, powerful winger who knows his way over the whitewash and I expect the Rhinos to start very brightly. Hall plays outside Keith Senior and will be the target for a lot of Sinfield and Maguire's kicks.
Here are my thoughts on the weekend's NRL action.
Warriors v Broncos (+6)
The Warriors were beaten last week but it was a good performance and back at home they can win and cover. Brisbane may still be without Darren Lockyer and if that's the case then New Zealand can finish their home campaign in style and secure a play-off spot in the process.
Sharks (+8) v Titans
Gold Coast have won five in a row and are in great form but this is the Sharks' final home game of the year and they say farewell Trent Barrett, who goes into retirement. A wet, cold windy night would suit the home side and with the Titans backing up from a Monday night game, I make the Sharks my bet of the round.
Raiders v Cowboys (+18)
I have a good insight into this one having coached both sides in the last three years. I know North Queensland hate travelling to Canberra and also know the Raiders love playing the Cowboys! This is a home banker and with the Raiders looking to improve their for and against they will cover. The Cowboys are the worst team in the competition right now and while you rarely see a start as big as this in the NRL, the Radiers can cope.
Handicaps coutresy of Sky Bet.
